When we opened Takurua Vets, we were new to New Zealand. Choosing a name in Te Reo was about grounding ourselves in the culture of the place we now call home.
With the support of Tuahiwi Marae, our clinic was named Takurua Vets. Takurua is the Māori name for Sirius, the brightest star in the southern sky, long used as a point of guidance. For us, that idea of a steady light helping people find their way captures what we aim to offer families when their pets are unwell - calm direction and reassurance on the journey back to health.
For our team, Takurua - the guiding star - is a reminder that trust is built by listening first, acting with respect and becoming part of the community we serve. As South Africans who have made Aotearoa our home, this name anchors us here, not just geographically, but in how we choose to practice every day.
