Kara is a veterinary nurse at Takurua Vets. Her favourite part of veterinary care is advocating for animals who cannot speak for themselves, caring for them when they are vulnerable, and helping them feel safe and comfortable.
Clients and their pets are likely to notice Kara's friendly, approachable nature and genuine love of animals, along with her Canadian accent. She meets each pet where they are, lets them take things at their own pace, and uses a calm, gentle approach, positive reinforcement and plenty of patience.
If she were a dog, Kara would be a Golden Retriever: naturally friendly, loyal, affectionate and people-oriented. She enjoys making others feel comfortable and supported, and brings positive, enthusiastic energy to the people and situations she cares about.
One of the most rewarding parts of Kara's work is helping those who cannot help themselves while continuing to learn and expand her knowledge. She values that veterinary medicine is always evolving and that there is always something new to learn and improve on.
At home, Kara has Willow, a five-year-old long-haired black cat with six extra toes and crossed eyes. Willow was found in a bathtub at eight weeks old on the streets of Vancouver Island, Canada.
Outside work, Kara is a retired nationally ranked competitive swimmer, is fluent in French, and can solve a Rubik's Cube in under 30 seconds. She has a weakness for sweet treats and happily rewatches The Office, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl. If she could choose a superpower, it would be x-ray vision, and her favourite advice is: "Don't forget to imagine the best case scenario too."
